Latinos for Texas endorsements for Bucknall, Clarke, & Dunkerley for Austin City Council.

Latinos for Texas (LFT) conducted a live endorsement caucus at their monthly meeting April 19, 2005, just in time for early voting for the Austin city council election. The caucus resulted in endorsements for candidates Andrew Bucknall (Place 1), Margot Clarke (Place 3), and Betty Dunkerley (Place 4).

Endorsements for Bucknall and Clarke in large part stem from LFTs strong grassroots background. Founding members of LFT were all highly active on the ground during the 2004 presidential election. "Andrew and Margot have strong track records of engaging communities at the grassroots level. That's what it's all about now - taking the message to the streets," said Crystal Viagran, political director of the group.

"After some lively discussion, we think the endorsed candidates will serve the Latino community well," said Crystal Viagran. "Place 3 provided excellent candidates, and many in our group believe Gregg Knaupe, Jennifer Kim, and Mandy Dealey will continue to make outstanding contributions to Austin's future. However, it was the majority's opinion that Margot Clarke would contribute most to the city council," she said.

LFT is a non-profit political organization created early this year and committed to the advancement of progressive policies and candidates that benefit the Hispanic community here in Texas. "Latinos for Texas was founded to promote Democracy for America's and Latinos for America's goals of supporting progressive candidates and promoting grassroots political organizing. LFT works to unite communities through direct actions that strengthen families and communities, and leads to broad prosperity, political participation, fair representation, and much more," said Mario Champion, executive director of LFT.
