Return To all Candidates...
Fidel Acevedo, Race for Travis County Democratic Party Chair
1. Why are you running, and what is your vision for your office?
I am running for Travis County Chair because there must be a change in how we do business at the county level. We are the strongest Democratic organization in the state, yet I see that we aren’t doing enough to bring all Democrats to the table. We have gotten comfortable and have adapted the rule of “containment” which systematically leaves out large groups of Democrats. I want to bring them to the table as well. I want to see this party grow and to do that, there must be someone heading the County Party that can devote full time to making our party great.
My vision for Travis County Democratic Party is to ensure the following is met. I am providing my platform as it shares my vision to all about the position as the Travis County Democratic Chair. As your Travis County Chair I would:
Cultivate the grassroots communities in Travis County by creating an environment that is inclusive and supportive of their initiatives. The party should be used as a portal for information and support when promoting grassroots initiatives.
Aggressively promote fundraising to increase strength of the TCDP by strengthening our efforts with a fundraising committee that promotes grassroots initiatives and reaches all of our voters.
Increase opportunities for volunteer participation within the party. Diversity in the party includes utilizing each individual’s capabilities and promoting opportunities that are viable to the organization.
Recruiting qualified community activist and political strategist for the party office to fill key positions within the county party.
Aggressively promote & outline feasible strategies for GOTV (Get Out the Vote) in a timely manner.
Eliminate the strategy of containment. We must move away from the strategy of containment, which ensures that only predictable voters are at the polls. Our party must push to seek out new voters and ensure that our candidates are accountable to all voters and not just a few.
Consistently provide continuous training and seek out best practices for precinct chairs and campaign volunteers. The responsibility of the county party is to ensure that all precinct chairs and volunteers has the most information possible and the proper tools to promote voting in the precincts.
Provide easy access, up to date and timely data to all precinct chairs and candidates.
Create a system of recognition for precinct chairs & volunteers.
Increase voter turnout in low performing precincts by promoting diversity and inclusion within the Travis County Democratic Party and providing training for precinct chairs and community activist.
Create a strong public relations and communications team that is visible to the Democratic community at all times and redirect the party to act as an information portal for Democratic candidates, clubs and organizations.
2. Latinos For Texas's vision is to unite communities by bridging networks of Progressive groups and Latino/Hispanic interests so that we can be better united in direct action for the community. How do you see your role in office as helping to advance this vision?
To unite Latino communities in the Democratic community by ensuring all are included in the political process, and in decisions related to the community. Latino interest must be factored into this party’s decision making and as County Chair, I would ensure that there is a Latino liaison in the Democratic Party to ensure representation in the county and in the state.
3. How does a vote for you affect or improve my everyday life?
Democrats in our county has long been fragmented and separated by the policy of containment. My goal is to ensure that each and every Democrat entering into the political communities of our county are heard, informed and represented within the county party. Everyday life is improved when we elect viable candidates, and then makes them accountable for their actions when they elect.
4. Would you pledge to abide by the Clean Elections guidelines developed by Common Cause?
Yes, I believe that it is important for all elections to be clean and mine would be no exception. My campaign abides by adhering to the rules of the Ethics Commission for financial reporting and we pledge to abide by the Common Cause.
