DFA reports on Ciro Rodriguez’s final sprint

Chris Warshaw, of Democracy for America, has been in SA for the final week before Ciro puts the big hurt on Henry Cuellar. This is what he says.

Here’s the best part:

Half a dozen Latinos for Texas volunteers made the trip down from Austin on Saturday afternoon and they knocked on over 400 doors over the course of the day.

Any comments from folks who were there?

I wouldn’t put to much stock in chuco35’s posts on dailykos…his numbers are off. And he keeps on saying that the voters of CD28 are liberal. They are not. They are loyal democrats, but they are not liberal democrats. Early voting in Webb is about where it was last year, maybe a few hundred higher. There will most likely be 33,000 or so votes cast in Webb, but not all are in CD28. San Antonio is about the same…early voting is about where it was last year. The thing is there are no top of the ticket races to bring out the democratic voters, so I would imagine that turnout will be low…bad for Ciro. Also, alot of democrats are not voting so they can get Strayhorn or Kinky on the ballot in November and that will also hurt turnout. I have a question for folks who were there too…are there any people that actually live in CD28 who are involved in Ciro’s campaign? Ciro sure is getting a lot of support from Austin and outside the state, but what about San Antonio and Laredo? If turnout is strong in SA, then Ciro makes it into a runoff with Cuellar. If turnout is low, Cuellar takes it outright tomorrow.

    hey chito:

you are right: low turnout in bexar would be bad for Ciro. it is going to be to the wire, and even tho cd-28 voters may or may not be liberal, i think if even a few in webb are peeled away from cuellar because cuellar is not a loyal democrat, it might just avoid a run-off.

but i wont at all be surprised if we are doing this again in a month.

    ahh, the anticipation,
    mario

Good luck to you and yours, but I don’t think that Ciro has done any blockwalking or personal campaigning in Laredo…at least that is what I hear from friends and family. Cuellar has been hitting SA hard, so I think he might do a little better than last time. If Cuellar wins, I think he will move to the left with his votes and rhetoric and try to make peace with his opponents. It has been sad to see the hateful tone of this campaign, though. Cuellar is a solid Democrat…he voted with the Dems 70% of the time, which is typical for a Texas Democrat, and I don’t think he deserves the attacks he has gotten. The only vote that I 100% disagree with him on was his support of the bankruptcy reform. Other than that, he has been a good congressman for the district.
